Permanent Jewelry: What It Is, How It Works, and Who It’s For
Permanent jewelry has been popping up everywhere lately — dainty chains, welded in place, that you never have to clasp or take off. If you’ve seen it on Instagram or TikTok and wondered what actually happens (and if it’s “too permanent”), this is for you.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what permanent jewelry is, how the process works at Totally Polished in Kelowna, and who it’s a good fit for, so you can decide if it’s something you’d love to try.
What Is Permanent Jewelry?
Permanent jewelry is a delicate chain that’s custom-fitted to you and welded closed instead of using a traditional clasp. That tiny weld creates a seamless piece you can wear every day — no fiddling with clasps, no worrying about it falling off.
At Totally Polished, I currently offer:
Bracelets – from $70
Necklaces – from $90
Charms / connectors – from $10 each
Each piece is meant to feel minimal, comfortable, and personal — something you can forget you’re wearing until you notice how pretty it looks in the light.
How the Process Works
The appointment itself is simple, calm, and usually pretty quick. Here’s what you can expect:
Choose your chain
When you arrive, you’ll choose from a selection of dainty chains (and charms, if you’d like). I’m happy to help you pick something that fits your style and how you plan to wear it.Custom fit
I’ll wrap the chain around your wrist, ankle, or neck to find the fit you like — snug, loose, or somewhere in between. We’ll check it a couple of times to make sure it feels right.Tiny weld
Once the fit is perfect, I’ll use a small welding machine to join the ends of the chain together. It’s a quick spark at one point on the chain — you’ll have protective covering and I’ll talk you through it so you know what’s happening.Final check
We’ll make sure everything feels comfortable and secure, and you’re good to go.
Most appointments are quite relaxed — lots of chatting, choosing chains, and a small moment of “oh, that’s it?” when the weld is done.
Does It Hurt?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and the answer is: no.
The weld is done on the chain, not your skin. You’ll feel me adjusting and positioning the chain, but the actual welding moment is just a quick spark on the metal. Your skin is protected, and I’ll let you know what I’m doing every step of the way so there are no surprises.
If you’re nervous, that’s okay — we can take it slow and I’ll walk you through it.
What If I Need to Remove It?
Despite the name, permanent jewelry doesn’t have to be forever.
If you ever need or want to remove your piece, you can:
Cut it at the weld point with a small pair of scissors or wire cutters
Keep the chain and bring it back to be rewelded or resized later
At Totally Polished, resizing / reapplication is $30, so you’re not “stuck” with it if life changes or you need to take it off for any reason.
Is It Safe for Airports, MRIs, and Everyday Life?
For most people, permanent jewelry fits easily into everyday life:
Airports:
Fine chains typically don’t cause any issues with airport security. Most people walk through with jewelry on all the time.MRIs / medical procedures:
If you’re ever told to remove all jewelry for a scan or procedure, you can simply cut the chain off at home and have it rewelded later if you’d like.Showers, sleep, workouts:
Your piece is meant to be worn all the time. Normal daily life (showering, sleeping, gentle workouts) is usually fine. Just be mindful of any activities where the chain could snag or pull.
If you have specific medical questions, it’s always best to follow your doctor or technician’s advice.
Who Is Permanent Jewelry For?
Permanent jewelry is a lovely fit if you:
Love minimal, everyday jewelry that goes with everything
Want a small way to mark a moment or relationship
Prefer not to fuss with clasps or remembering to put jewelry on
Like the idea of something that feels special but still subtle
Some of my favorite appointments have been:
Best friends getting matching bracelets
Couples choosing a simple, meaningful chain together
Mother–daughter pieces to mark a milestone
Groups celebrating birthdays, bachelorettes, or girls’ nights
